I have always been enthralled by the figure and the ability for it to change and be many things in one compacted form. The figure for me is a vessel to carry understanding between artist and viewer rather than just a simple representation. I love to push the boundaries of what the sculpture can do and the test the limits of realism.
The way in which I view the world and my experiences are utilised with the aim of encouraging reflection and existential evaluation.
Metaphorical symbolism is used to reinforce the narrative of the sculpture as well as providing a strong compositional element.
I aim to permeate the work with my own style being vigorous and energetic with the material to achieve something which is tactile and has a presence within its setting. Cast metal is ideal media for preserving this sense of physical interaction and I have experimented with the full range from Lead and Bronze to Cast Iron.
The process of creation itself is of great fascination to me..I believe in spontaneity and will rarely make a maquette, preferring instead to start with only a few drawn lines then allowing it to evolve under my hands as I work. The journey the sculpture then goes on after the initial clay model is completed, is like a re-birth, where, when it comes out in cast metal it is a wholly different, beautiful entity.
